Not that I've any issue with Keith, mind you, but it seems that the Christian Right is more than happy to ignore a few sins where Miss Prejean is concerned--because they fit into their political agenda. Miss Prejean and her nude photographs have become the Evangelical cause de jour.
No one seems to care that she posed nude. No one cares that she lied to the contest about nude photos. No one seems to care that she was willing to have her body turned into a sex object enhanced by breast implants and oogled by millions of men. Not an issue because she was not tempted by Satan to compromise on the Gay Agenda.
Carrie Prejean and Bristol Palin have a lot in common. Both suit the Christian Right's political agenda. If Bristols' mom had been a moderate Republican, Bristol would have become the poster child for immoralithy and sexual sin. But because her mom believes in Creationism, welfare reform and tax cuts, Bristol's out of wedlock pregnancy became a "family value."
If Carrie Prejean had taken a moderate stance on homosexuality, she'd be last week's news, her 15 minutes of fame evaporated and the second those contract nullifying photos appeared, she'd have been gone.
Just once, might we see the Christian Right extend a olive branch of forgiveness and compassion to someone who doesn't fit neatly into their political goals? Might they reach out to Ted Haggard or Bill Clinton? Nah. They're too busy patting David Vitters on the back and turning the other cheek on Newt Gingrich and John McCain. The sins aren't different. The value of the sinner to the cause is.
