Compliments of today's Portland Press Herald, here are reasons to rejoice in our never-ending winter weather:
It seems cruel, this snowstorm to begin March. But this endless winter isn't all bad. Who can resist the snowbanks that obscure drivers' views, the salt-encrusted sidewalks, the slush, or the abdominal workout that comes from what feels like nonstop shoveling? So, in grudging acknowledgment that March often brings some of the wettest, heaviest snow of the year, we offer these reasons not to hate winter in Maine:
1. ALL THE SNOW hides junk cars, couches and other rustic landscaping touches.
2. THE CHANCES of a drought this summer are virtually nil.
3. GLOBAL WARMING might be farther away than we thought.
4. THERE'S FINALLY TIME to stay inside and read "War and Peace."
5. WHEN YOUR CO-WORKERS gloat about flying to Florida on vacation, you can gloat right back when their flight's canceled and they're stranded at the airport.
6. IT'S A GOOD TIME to practice the power of positive thinking, especially when the city plow dumps huge chunks of ice back into your just-shoveled driveway.
7. NO TOURISTS.
8. PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY to hone your winter driving technique.
9. YOU CAN MAKE small talk about the weather with anyone.
10. PLENTY OF SNOW for Bethel to make the world's largest snowwoman.
